switch to Flickr

So we've tried the whole blog thing, and it's just too time consuming for a trip like this. We're officially switching to just Flickr.

It's way more interesting for us if you leave comments too!

Check it out to see us finally make it out of the great state of Texas...

More of Texas...

We ate at a great hotel restaurant along the way to Fort Davis, TX. It was a gem in the midst of barrenness - a narrow strip in what felt like the middle of nowhere.

Pepper crusted venison & duck enchiladas - yum!

The long road through Texas

5/26

Welcome to the great state of Texas. Only 878 more miles.

Stayed with Ashley (my Maid of Honor) in San Antonio, finally met her beau, and did the river walk - a favorite of mine because of all the fairy lights, but largely overdone for the locals.

We found out her family's house is on the National Register of Historic Places - we stayed in a historic location!

Drove quickly by the Alamo - another local favorite ;-)

Cracked windshield adventures

5/26

And we thought we'd had our final BBQ before Portland!

We found this place just off the highway when we pulled off to check out a windshield crack we'd just gotten - a truck kicked up a rock and caused this beauty.

New Orleans

5/25

We stayed with a great family in New Orleans - friends of Pastor John & Debbie's - and were impressed with the ability of Hurricane Katrina to bring communities together. They told us of how each neighborhood was required to submit a plan for rebuilding and all plans were taken into consideration as the city was rebuilt.

In the evening, we went to the French Quarter, which was an interesting mix of old world charm and debauchery. Amazingly, just one street away from the parties of Bourbon St, we couldn't hear any of the noise.

Had a sampling of traditional dishes for dinner - shrimp creole, gumbo, jambalaya, red beans & rice, and an amazing whiskey bread pudding.

Finished off the night with beignets - basically funnel cake in a solid square - and chicory coffee on the Mississippi River.
